Our wedding for S & R on Bowen Island was held at her family’s cabin and summer home. Enchanting Bowen Island is only three nautical miles from the Mainland, but it feel as it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of The Lower Mainland. This is no accident – the Island retains much of its charm thanks to the Bowen Island Conservancy and the Islands Trust Fund. These two organizations create “Conservation Covenants” or voluntary agreements to conserve land or special natural features with land owners. Unfortunately the “old growth” fir is long gone from the island, but two 1000 year old trees still remain and the beauty of this special place is protected for years to come.
Tall stands of moss covered second generation Douglas Fir filled the wedding location. A beautiful wooden arch decorated with flowers framed the entrance into the forrest where the ceremony was held. A hydration station of water infused with fresh herbs gathered from the property was available for guests prior to the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, guests made their way through the trees the an area set up for the “cocktail hour. A sumptuous oyster bar was featured with signature cocktails – Hers was a “Strawberry-Mint Sparkler” and His was an “Old Fashioned”. A canoe filled with ice and cold beer and cider rounded out the drink selection.
Dinner was served “family-style” with guests first passing a duo of salads – “Heirloom Tomato with Mozzarella” and “Gathered Greens” followed by roasted “Summer Vegetables and Nugget Potatoes” with heaping platters of “Grilled Rack of Lamb” and “Roasted Lingcod”.
Dessert was an assortment of “Mini Donuts” from Cartems alongside a cake made by the bride’s twin sister.
The wedding was held a week after the summer solstice and the long day of light led to a breathe taking sunset complete with a late night snack of mini ramekins of Mac & Cheese.
