15 Nov A Culinary Corporate Christmas Party
Ok, at first blush, the words ‘corporate’ and ‘Christmas’ don’t necessarily freely associate. No, Charles Dickens did not write “A Corporate Christmas Carol,” although some employees may relate a little too intimately with the Scrooge character. And no, the line “visions of Christmas bonuses danced in their heads” appears nowhere in the famous yuletide poem Twas the Night Before Christmas. So, yeah. We understand that it can be slightly daunting to be put in charge of your corporate Christmas party planning committee. Fortunately, you can put your corporate festivity fears at bay, as we know how to put the “fun” in corporate function!
The Meal is the Message
Apologies to Marshall McLuhan, but when it comes to a truly memorable event, the central ingredient (pun intended) is the food! Think back on all of your favourite events and we’re willing to go out on a limb and say that food was most likely featured prominently. This is something that we understand intimately, as food is a truly universal way of expressing love, gratitude and respect. Indeed, no matter where in the world we’ve traveled, food has always transcended language. Whether it was fresh, handmade Tortellini al Burro from Trattoria Sostanza in Florence, or momos (dumplings) prepared by a grandma in Darjeeling, the gastronomic subtext was the same–we mattered.
Don’t Be a Weenie
Nothing says “we don’t really care about you” than budget, processed and store-bought hors-d’oeuvres and canapés. You know what we’re talking about: those questionable shrimp platters and cocktail weenies from Costco or (gasp) Walmart. Your corporate holiday party is a chance to let your employees, colleagues, and coworkers know just how much you appreciate them, and the best way to do that is to greet them with lovely, gorgeous, and mouth-watering hors-d’oeuvres! It really is the small things leave lasting impressions.
You Had Me at Hors D’oeuvres
A classy touch to any corporate party is hiring custom caterers who will circulate the event with fresh trays of hors-d’oeuvres and cocktails. This immediately makes guests feel welcome and part of the party and encourages mingling, rather than the rather unfortunate pile up at the bar or designated food table. Furthermore, it conveys the message that your employees and coworkers are special and deserving of quality and class. Again, it’s a small gesture that goes a very long way.
A Seat at the Table
Whether you’re planning a sit-down affair of a cocktail party vibe, the most important factor is culinary diversity. It’s important to remember that everyone has a different food lifestyle. You’ll have everything from Paleo’s to Vegans at your corporate party, so it’s best to make sure everyone has a proverbial seat at the table. There’s nothing worse than not being able to partake in the meal at a party. The best course of action is to make sure to consult your catering company well in advance of the party, to ensure that everyone will be able to enjoy the food regardless of their dietary choices or restrictions. Think about talking to your caterers about gluten and dairy free options as well. The reality is that there can be complex emotions around diet and restrictions, so not only will you ensure that everyone will feel good about the food, but, again, the message conveyed to your staff is “we care.”
