Catering to Your Teen!
When I was three, locally-sourced meant that I found the food in my kitchen!
Health Conscious and Ethically-Minded
I was at a bistro the other day and I overheard the three-year-old at the table next to me ask the waiter if the chicken strips she ordered were locally sourced. When I was a kid, locally-sourced meant that I found the food in my kitchen! The point being that kids and teens in Vancouver are very well-informed about their food and from where it comes! They care about what they consume and are far more health-conscious and ethically-minded when it comes to what they eat.
Millenials Changing the Food Game
When I was a teen, I used to buy three chocolate bars for a dollar at the local 7-eleven on my way home every day (and I wondered why the acne?!). Now teens are making smarter choices and cutting out processed, high-fructose snacks. Those millennials are changing the food game and we’re following their lead!
A “No Hot Dog Zone”
This is all great news, but if you’re a parent and you’ve been tasked with helping your tween or teen host their birthday party, things can get complicated! In short, hot dogs and potato chips will simply not do anymore! In fact, if you attempt to serve hot dogs, I guarantee a disgusted tween will ask, “do you know what’s in those things!”
The reality is that many teens are choosing alternative diets, such as Veganism or Vegetarianism, so the one-size-fits-all menu simply doesn’t work anymore.
Teen Catering Ideas!
Add to that the fact that kids today are super-conscious about the quality, freshness, and ethical treatment of their food, you’ll need to put some serious thought and effort into the food you’re planning to serve.
But fret not! We’ve got some great catering ideas for you that we’re sure your tween/teen will love (as well as their friends)!
Fun, Fresh and Uncomplicated
One thing that has not changed with teens is their love for fun food. Their palates may be more sophisticated, but they are still teens–we’re not suggesting you serve Coquilles Saint Jacques or Tuna Tartar! The key to the successful teen birthday party is keeping it fun, fresh, healthy, uncomplicated and delicious! And really, shouldn’t all food be?
Here are just a few suggestions to get you started!
Build Your Own Mac and Cheese Bar
This is a great option, as your teen and their friends can choose exactly what they want on their Mac and Cheese! This creamy 3 cheese macaroni with toppings bar (crispy buttered panko, bacon bits, sautéed mushrooms, green onions, grated white cheddar, parmesan shavings, ketchup, hot sauce) is perfect for the teen Mac and Cheese aficionado!
This is a perfect Tween/Teen option! A trio of beef burgers, with the following toppings:
- Aged cheddar, ketchup, mustard, sliced pickle
- Applewood smoked cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, “Triple O” sauce
- Crumbled blue cheese, caramelized onion, garlic aioli
Thai Noodle Bar
For something a tad more exotic, we’re sure they’ll love the Thai Noodle Bar! Rice noodles tossed with cucumber, scallions, bean sprouts, mint and Thai basil. With grilled ginger and lemongrass chicken, BBQ pork, crisp wonton ribbons, peanut sauce, hot chili sauce, shredded lettuce and chopped toasted cashews. Assorted spring rolls with Asian plum sauce. This option is always healthy and super-fresh!
We could go on with more ideas, but we think you’re starting to get the idea! We’d love to help you create the perfect party for your tween/teen,and look forward to hearing from you! Let’s make their birthday party a memory for years to come!
