100 Reasons to Celebrate!

A few years ago, many of my Asian friends started inviting me to Red Egg and Ginger Parties, alternatively called 100 Day Celebrations. To be honest, I had no idea what that meant or what they were all about. When I asked my friend, Connie, who invited me to hers, she explained that, traditionally, the reason that they held the ceremony was to celebrate the survival of babies, as mortality rates were very high.

Luck and Balance

She explained to me that guests are presented with red eggs, which symbolize luck and unity, and pickled ginger, which are believed to bring the body back into balance after childbirth.

Blending the Old With the New

However, Connie explained that nowadays, the younger generations have kept some of the traditional aspects of the custom and added more modern elements to it.

It’s about Family and Friends

Obviously, as modern science has greatly improved infant mortality rates, the 100 Day Celebration is less about celebrating the survival of one’s baby and more about inviting family and friends over to meet the baby and congratulate the parents.

“Generally, these celebrations are less formal than in the past, and blend the old and the new,” explains Connie. For example, at a more casual party, you may be served buffet style, or have food inspired by Red Egg and Ginger, like cupcakes with red frosting, raspberry-ginger lemonade or egg-shaped sugar cookies.

Post-Baby Shower

In many ways, you could describe the 100 Days Party as a “post-baby shower,” as gifts are given to the new parents and, of course, a great meal is at the heart and centre of the party!

Have it Catered!

As a result of the evolution of the 100 Day Celebrations, many families are deciding to have the affair catered. This makes a lot of sense, as the parents are busy with their newborn and, generally speaking, these parties are attended by guests who also have children–in short, there are usually a lot of kids at these parties, so catering is an easy and time-efficient solution!

Be In the Moment

Whether your 100 Day Celebration is for 10 or 100 guests, having it catered is a wonderful way to be able to spend time with your family, and be present in the moment with them (and of course your baby), rather than stuck in the kitchen prepping all the food.

You deserve to sit back and relax and enjoy this momentous occasion too!

Best Catering Options

We suggest that for this type of event you consider buffet style, grazing stations or simply going with a variety of canapés or hors-d’oeuvres. It’s usually the best way to go as it is conducive to a more social and casual ambiance, and makes it so much easier for parents to eat and tend to their children!
